Microorganisms and Log-Reductions Demystified

Why "UV-C Light + 99.9% Effective" is not an Engineering Specification

Why "99.9% Effective" is a Marketing Claim, Not an Engineering Specification:

If you are evaluating, buying, or designing a UV-C decontamination system, you have undoubtedly seen the claim: "Eliminates 99.9% of pathogens."

It sounds impressive on a sales brochure. But in the realm of true biological safety, a vague percentage is a dangerous metric to rely on. What happens when your starting bacterial load is one million? What if your target pathogen is a highly resistant fungal spore? What if the surface isn't perfectly flat?

In this week's Miranova Engineering Lens, we are stripping away the marketing jargon and looking at the hard science of decontamination.

Click on the infographic below to demystify:

  • The Math of Bioburden: Why a 3-Log (99.9%) reduction might still leave you with a dangerous contamination level.

  • Targeted UV-C Dosing: Why killing mold takes drastically more energy than killing standard bacteria.

  • Biological Armor: How microscopic surface cracks and clustered cells act as physical shields against UV-C light.
